In 2022, actor Tate Donovan took part in the fourth annual Project SOS: Surf 24, a celebrity surfathon dedicated to supporting ocean conservation efforts. The event, held in the Pacific Ocean, saw Donovan joining other stars, including John Slattery from Mad Men and Jesse Spencer from House, along with professional surfers.

The surfathon aimed to raise awareness and funds for organizations that focus on clean water and ocean preservation. Among the beneficiaries were Santa Monica Baykeeper, Waves for Water, Inside the Outdoors, and Tumelo Home.

For Donovan, the event marked a personal journey with surfing. Although he had tried the sport two decades ago, a negative encounter with an aggressive surfer discouraged him from continuing. However, five years before the event, during a bachelor’s surf party, Donovan decided to give surfing another shot. Determined not to “wimp out” while his friends surfed, he returned to the water, learned proper techniques, and has been surfing ever since.

At 48 years old, Donovan expressed his passion for the sport, calling it “a magical time.” While personal enjoyment is a factor, Donovan emphasized the importance of preserving the oceans for future generations. His participation in the event highlighted his commitment to ocean conservation, underscoring that the goal is not just to enjoy the oceans, but to protect them for everyone.
