Michelle Obama’s lifelong dedication to education and equality continues to shine through the Girls Opportunity Alliance, a program of The Obama Foundation. In celebration of the 2025 International Day of the Girl, the Alliance announced an incredible $2.5 million commitment to support 54 organizations in 28 countries, all focused on empowering adolescent girls through education, mentorship, and opportunity.
From Uganda to Colombia, Indonesia to India, the initiative is fueling change where it’s needed most. Each organization supported helps girls gain confidence, life skills, and the tools to lead within their communities. Whether through mentorship programs, STEM bootcamps, or academic workshops, these projects share one mission—breaking barriers and opening doors for girls who might otherwise be left behind.
In Uganda, the Amani Initiative is expanding its Dream Achievers Program, helping girls at risk of dropping out stay in school through life skills training and mentorship. In Indonesia, Generation Girl is equipping young women with coding and leadership skills, while in Trinidad and Tobago, Girls With Roots empowers students through self-expression, confidence, and community. Each effort embodies the same belief: that education transforms lives.
Michelle Obama described the movement as a celebration of the “promise, talent, and determination inherent in every girl,” reminding the world that when girls rise, entire communities thrive. Valerie Jarrett, CEO of The Obama Foundation, echoed that sentiment, emphasizing that empowering girls creates ripples of positive change across nations.
Since its launch, the Girls Opportunity Alliance has supported over 200 grassroots projects across 46 countries, reaching hundreds of thousands of young women. Beyond funding, it connects leaders in a global network to share knowledge, resources, and hope.
Through this growing alliance, Michelle Obama continues to show that real progress begins when we invest in girls—their education, their dreams, and their futures.
